belief

Today in Western Civ we talked more about philosophy and good questions and basically the fact that we do philosophy every day! Some good philosophical quotes/questions would be “ Why is there something rather than nothing?”, “Do we have free will?”, “Can you really experience anything objectively?”, “Why do we dream?”, “What does it mean to live a good life?”, Is it possible to live a normal life and not ever tell a lie?”, “Does a person’s name influence the person they become?”, and my favorite “Does God exist?”. This is my favorite philosophical question because everyone believes in something. Weather it’s their belief in a God, or multiple gods, or just their religion itself. Everyone wants to know what happens when we die? Many believe we go into a greater place, Heaven, in which I believe in too! I believe that we go through this hard path to get to a greater place if we deserve to be. This question is my favorite because it has yet been answered and truly prob...

philosophy

In western civ today we watched a video about philosophy. Which is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline. Also, there are many other types of philosophy such as Aesthetics, Epistemology, and Ethics. Aesthetics is in a way that gives pleasure through beauty. Epistemology is the theory of knowledge, especially with regard to its methods, validity, and scope. Epistemology is the investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion. Ethics is the branch of knowledge that deals with moral principles. Here is a quote that has philosophy in it “The unexamined life is not worth living” – Socrates.

project

Today in Western Civilization, Mr. Schick gave us a project to discuss about, and pick groups, and ideas. My group has Lily Dippel, Grace Madigan, and Alyssa Quian. We decided we wanted to do our project on a story- based pot. We are going to go to Mr. Gudreau’s room during lunch period and start making the pot! We are going to have each person work on a part of the pot and have drawings on it. We decided we are going to make a print design on the tips of the pot and have a story in the middle of it. Our story is going to be about Hercules and the three-headed snake!

Socrates

Today in Western Civilization we learned more about Socrates. We know a lot about him through writings his students wrote, Plato and Xenophon. Socrates was born circa 470 BC, in Athens, Greece.  His "Socratic method," laid the groundwork for Western systems of logic and philosophy. When the political climate of Greece turned, Socrates was sentenced to death by hemlock poisoning in 399 BC. He accepted this judgment rather than fleeing into exile. Though his friends had found him a way to escape he didn’t he stuck to his punishment no matter how many times he could’ve escaped.  Because these writings had other purposes than reporting his life, it is likely none present a completely accurate picture. However, collectively, they provide a unique and vivid portrayal of Socrates's philosophy and personality.
