project

Today in Western Civ we presented our projects. This is what my project was about! The clay to produce pottery was very available all through Greece, but the finest clay was Attic clay, which has a high content of iron give in and burn orange color wen fired. The pot would be made on a potters’ wheel and made in separate sections: the food, the lower and upper body, and finally the handles. The separate sections that were made were joined together with clay slip after drying then they would put the final pot back on the potters’ wheel to smooth out the joined marks and add the final shaping of the pot. All the pots are made very uniquely because they are all hand-made and they did not have the tools that we are available to use today. The next thing that would be done was the decorating. It depends on the style of the pot, the popular method included painting the whole pot or sections of the pot with a thin black paint that was applied to the pot with a paint brush. When the pot was completely done they would put it in the kiln at a temperature around 960*c, the pots were put in the kiln several times in order to achieve a certain finish or coloring. The process is very complicated and is required skill and excellent timing from the potter.
